| The Rockwall County Sheriff's Office employ's one of the
state's best communications units. The communications Division of the
Rockwall County Sheriff's Office depends on highly trained dispatchers
and a sophisticated computer system to assist members of the community,
and the officers in the field to protect the lives and property of the
citizens that we serve. |
| |
| |
Duties |
|
| The duties of the Communications Division are extensive.
This unit handles all incoming calls, including 911 calls, and dispatches
emergency units according to the location and type of call. After receiving
a call, the dispatcher enters the information into a Computer Aided
Dispatch (CAD) and uses the radio to send the units to the call. |
| |
| Radio Communications is used to communicate with the officers
in the field for safety and to gain information on subjects that the
officer is in contact with in the field. On the radio the deputy can
talk to the dispatchers to check for wanted/stolen or missing persons.
To do this the dispatcher uses a TCIC/NCIC computer system that is linked
to all law enforcement agencies. DISPATCH is the lifeline between the
officers in the field and the sheriff's office to protect the dispatcher,
the citizen calling into the sheriff's office and the field officers,
all calls are taped as well as the radio traffic transmitted and received.
In summary of a dispatcher's day at work: |

"IT ONLY TAKES 2 SECONDS FOR A DISASTER TO HAPPEN." |

Computer Systems |
|
| The Rockwall County Sheriff's Office, Communications Division
uses the CAD or computer aided dispatching system, which is an in-house
computer to insure accuracy and professionalism. The computer system
used by dispatchers consists of a network of terminals that link both
state and nation law enforcement agencies. This network is made up of
two systems. (1) TLETS (Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems)
and (2) NLETS (National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System).
These systems receive their information from two sources, (1), TCIC
(Texas Crime Information Center) and (2), NCIC (National Crime Information
Center). All of these systems link all law enforcement agencies together
so that we may better serve the public. |
| |
| With these systems, we are able to check for wanted persons,
stolen vehicles, or items. Check the status of Driver's Licenses, and
any other criminal activity. This system, also sends teletypes from
the National Weather Service of severe weather approaching to any area
in the path of a storm. In winter months we are able to check road conditions
(closed, snow packed, etc) in any area of the state. We also use the
system to enter wanted, stolen, and/or missing persons, items, or vehicles.
This information may be also useful to other law enforcement agencies. |
| |
| Special care is taken that details are correct when using
the sophisticated systems of the Communications Division. Dispatchers
ensure that all information is entered, or received is as correct as
possible before taking action. |
