Fogging is scheduled to take place Monday through Wednesday between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
A mosquito trapped in the greenbelt near the intersection of State Highway 205 and Memorial Drive has tested positive for West Nile virus, according to a prepared statement from the City of Rockwall.
Following city protocol, crews will treat nearby bodies of water with larvicide and conduct mosquito fogging within a half-mile radius of the trap location. Fogging is scheduled to take place Monday through Wednesday between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Residents with koi ponds or those who do not want their property included in the fogging operation are asked to contact WYoung@rockwall.com.
City officials said mosquito traps are monitored weekly from May through October in northern, central and southern Rockwall. Collected mosquitoes are sent to the lab in Austin for testing. When a mosquito tests positive for a virus like West Nile, the city initiates fogging efforts in the affected area.
To help protect against mosquito bites, the city recommends the following:
– Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
– Drain standing water in items such as cans, tires, buckets, gutters and plant saucers.
– Wear long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.
