Rockwall, TX-Apr. 15, 2025 - The Rockwall County Health Authority is issuing this public health notification to inform residents that a confirmed case of measles has been identified in our county. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has indicated this case may be connected to the recent West Texas outbreak based on the individual's travel history.
Case Details:
• An adult resident of Rockwall County tested positive for measles last week. Measles is infectious for four days prior to and four days after rash onset.
• The individual traveled to West Texas recently.
• The individual was at home for most of their infectious period. People who were exposed when the individual sought medical treatment have been notified of their exposure.
• The individual is no longer infectious and has recovered.
Public Health Response:
The Rockwall County Health Authority worked with DSHS to identify and notify potentially exposed individuals. Those who may have been in close contact with the infected individual during the contagious period have been contacted directly by health officials.
Vaccination Status and Risk Assessment:
The Health Authority would like to reassure the public that individuals who have been fully vaccinated against measles with two doses of the MMR vaccine have a very low risk of contracting the disease. However, unvaccinated individuals or those who have not completed their vaccination series, including:
• Young children who have not yet received both doses of the MMR vaccine
• Individuals who have not received booster shots
• Those with compromised immune systems
remain at higher risk and should be vigilant about potential exposure.
Measles Information:
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Early symptoms include:
• High fever (may spike to over 104°F)
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red, watery eyes
• White spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots)
• Followed by a characteristic rash 3-5 days after symptoms begin

• If you believe you may have been exposed and are experiencing symptoms consistent with measles, please call your healthcare provider before visiting in person
• Those who have not been vaccinated or are unsure of their vaccination status are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider about receiving the MMR vaccine
